Making the most of your Subject Learning Coaches

The prime aim of the Teaching and Learning Programme originally was — and still is — to ‘embed excellence in teaching and learning and to modernise and upgrade the sector’s workforce’: a big ambition. The programme represents a significant and long-term investment in the further education system. The holistic package of subject-specialist resources, training and ongoing support is unique, and early research indicates the powerful benefits of participation in the programme. However, the full benefits of the programme can only be realised with the active support of managers. Subject Learning Coaches can make a big difference to teaching, training and learning and have a powerful impact on learners and immediate colleagues. But if you want these benefits to extend beyond local impact and to make a real difference to your organisation as a whole, what you need is a more strategic approach.
